my comp has been freezing up lately for no apparent reason. I do regular scans so doubt it's a bug. Think it might be a hardware issue? What would be the most common failure?

Freezing up (not crashing) is often associated with overheating and motherboard issues, in my experience. Check to make sure you don't have any dead fans first (including on your video card). While you're in there, inspect your motherboard for faulty capacitors; they look like small batteries and should have a flat, sealed top. If any of the tops are rounded or leaking something orange - that's a problem. There are a number of free utilities out there to check your operating temps if your mb didn't come with one.

Nothing appears to be running hot persay. cpu is around 18 celsius, ram around 20-32, HD at 30 and vid card at 29. fans are 100% as well. I'll check the rest in morning. I want to play swtor, haven't been able to since last friday.

Definitely not heat then. Does it freeze when doing particular things or particular applications/games? Does it freeze after x minutes regardless of what you're doing..?

That's a pretty strange issue then. Two most obvious causes would be Firefox itself or possibly a Firefox extension if you're running any. You could try Chrome as a browser just to see if you get the same behavior.

Are you getting a complete operating system lockup? Any errors? You can look through your event logs to see if anything seems to be happening just prior. Typically on a real Op system freeze, you wont often see the exact cause as the system will lockup before an event log can be entered, but you can at least see the last things it was doing prior. I've been able to troubleshoot issues similar in the past here at work w here we'd have a service or application firing up a few seconds before the event logs would stop due to a lockup. Could backtrack from there and eliminate problems.

As Vy said though, swapping to a different browser for a while might do the trick. If you're using a 64-bit os Try waterfox. Its essentially firefox built to handle the extra bits. I run it as my main browser and have had maybe a total of 3 browser lockups in the past year or so.

Firefox isn't going to lock up the computer any more than Chrome or IE would. More likely you have a hardware issue (memory most likely) based on what you describe. Run memtest86 to see if you have any memory issues. It could also be a CPU issue. Run a utility such as Prime95 to see if you're having CPU issues. You could also be having video card issues, but you'd most likely see a lot of other issues before your computer would lock up.

This could also be a driver or firmware issue. It wouldn't hurt to update your BIOS, and ensure all your drivers are up to date. That means video, audio, network, etc. Basically for anything that requires drivers, make sure you go get the latest from the manufacturer. If that doesn't do it, disconnect all peripherals except what's absolutely necessary (keyboard, mouse, monitor), and see if you still get the lockups. If you don't, you can bet it's one of your peripherals. If you do, it's something internal, and you can then narrow it down from there.

According to the interwebs that is a delightfully annoying piece of malware. There are some guides on removing you can use but a malware fixer should be able to do it on it's own, probably want to do it in safe-mode.

Still have the Window's CD? Or if it's a store bought computer do you have the recovery CD? If so try and run a Windows Repair. It's possible an OS system file got corrupted. That can cause random issues. If thats the case then repeated problems with the same file can cause further corruption, thus causing the lockups to increase in frequency.
