Air guns and needle air guns were banned in the 1700's / 1800's as being too devastating. Basically it was brutal for the time period given it's rate of fire and magazine capacity; they come up for auction every so often if anyone wants one. $$$ bring your check book. It was amazingly advanced given the time period

Amazing technology at the time and an amazing application of it by the expedition.

There is one of these (believe it is the one that Lewis and Clark carried) at the St. Lewis Arch. I had no idea they existed until I saw that - then did the research - yup - pretty amazing weapon for the time.
