What's a good free easy to use photo editing software? Really all I need to do is add text to a picture but ms paint is difficult about it.

Try Paint.NET. It's free, and actually a pretty decent tool. It's not the Paint program that comes with Windows by a LONG stretch. It's more along the lines of Gimp in quality. I guess you could try Gimp too for that matter.

I suppose I'll need to crop photos also. I'm working on a personal project that looks like it might be quite time consuming, at least more than i thought it would be

Gimp is essentially photoshop but free. It's got a lot of bells and whistles. For what you mentioned tho the paint.net sounds like a good program
